2020 MARCHING BAND UPDATE (8/18/2020)

Hello Music Families,

With school opening remote until November and Fall sports being postponed, I, unfortunately, must report that the 2020 Marching Band Season will also be put on hold. I was thrilled that so many of you took the time to fill out our band packet and marching band return survey. Over 80% of our members said they were going to return if we were allowed. That meant a lot.

The marching band staff and the directors at the sister high schools have been brainstorming some marching band related “special events” that we can do in the fall. We’ll keep you all in the loop about those happenings.

Thirty-one years ago, I was forced by my mother to join the high school Marching Band. I went kicking and screaming, but within minutes I had a diverse and lifelong group of friends who helped me acclimate to high school, give me a sense of belonging, and motivate me to get better in almost every aspect of my life. I pursued music, which allowed me to see the world as my instrument provided me the chance to play in Disney, Europe, and beyond. A conductor I know was a football player in his 50’s, and he says his body won’t let him play sports anymore, but he still can play the clarinet.

As we plan for remote learning, then a transition to hybrid, and hopefully a return full “normal” school, I promise that I will try my best to make the bands at Concord an excellent experience for all of you. I didn’t know it at the time, but being in the music program at my high school gave me absolutely everything I have in life. A family, a career, a purpose, happiness, and a community of the greatest friends and colleagues one could ever ask for. (That’s most likely why I try to defend music education so vigorously.) Now more than ever, it is essential that we, as music teachers make sure your students have a great experience despite our displacement. Believe me, I will try to do the best I can for the students of the bands at Concord.

I will be in contact soon with more details about instrument distribution and how we will continue to have music classes in the remote setting. I’ll also keep you all apprised about any special events we will be hosting as well.

To my Seniors and Section-Leaders, you are fantastic. You have always been impressive. You have been the backbone of our band for years. Watching you grow into the people who are sure to be tomorrow’s leaders makes me optimistic about the world’s future.

Hope to See You Soon,
Dr. Pisano
